At Best Retrievers, we believe the most effective training begins with connection. Every dog, like every person, has a unique way of feeling valued and understood. These differences—what we call their love language—help us shape not only obedience, but also confidence, trust, and long-term success.
By identifying and responding to the way each dog receives affection and motivation, we lay the foundation for training that is both effective and deeply meaningful.
For some dogs, a treat is more than a snack—it’s a reward that speaks directly to their heart. These dogs respond best when progress is paired with something they love.
Encouraging words can be powerful. Praise-filled tones, simple affirmations, and sincere verbal cues go a long way for dogs who are motivated by the sound of your approval.
A gentle hand on the shoulder or a soft pat on the chest can reassure and motivate dogs who are comforted by touch. For these dogs, physical affection builds the trust they need to learn and grow.
Some dogs simply want your presence. They’re the ones who come alive when they feel seen, included, and engaged. For these companions, your undivided attention is the most valuable reward.
For dogs who crave activity and usefulness, nothing says “I care” like a game of fetch, a new bumper, or time spent doing meaningful work. These are the dogs who live to serve—and love to be invited in.
Training should never be one-size-fits-all. By meeting dogs where they are and recognizing how they connect emotionally, we’re able to tailor our approach for the greatest impact—whether the goal is obedience, hunting, or a well-adjusted companion at home.

At Best Retrievers, our goal is more than commands—it’s connection. Let us help you uncover the language your dog understands best, and build something lasting from there.
