The Gun Dog Training program at Best Retrievers is a comprehensive four to five-month program designed to transform your retriever into an obedient and reliable hunting companion. With our in-kennel training programs, we take care of boarding, feeding, and training your dog to the desired level of performance you seek.

Our program begins with a thorough obedience training phase during the first month. We teach your dog five essential commands: Sit, Down, Heel, Here, and Place. Starting on a leash and transitioning to off-leash obedience with an electronic collar, we prioritize establishing a strong foundation of basic obedience, which is crucial for a successful hunting dog.

Throughout the program, we introduce your dog to birds (ducks and pigeons), gunfire, and swimming, fostering a natural desire to retrieve with plenty of fun bumpers. We ensure your dog is steady to shot and reliably retrieves and delivers birds to hand under various hunting scenarios.

In the second month, we focus on teaching your dog how to properly hold, fetch, and deliver bumpers and birds on command. This process is vital for teaching the dog to heel and deliver birds to hand without playing or mouthing them.

During the third month, we transition the training into a basic retrieve in the field. Your retriever learns to retrieve on command, hunt and find birds in cover, and reliably return birds to hand, both on land and water.

As your dog progresses, we introduce them to a variety of hunting scenarios, from dove hunting to duck hunting in a blind. Our goal is to expose your retriever to different setups so they can be comfortable in any hunting environment. Additionally, our program prepares your dog to run the basic level hunt test program for both AKC (Junior) and HRC (Started).
