Over the years, we’ve worked with many wonderful dogs that weren’t retrievers—but we’ve also seen a recurring challenge: while these dogs may have great potential, most weren’t bred with the natural retrieving drive our Gundog Program is built around. When dogs without that innate desire are placed into this program, it can lead to frustration—for both the dog and the owner. They’re often expected to perform like a retriever, when their breed was developed for a completely different purpose.

We originally tried placing non-retriever breeds directly into our obedience program or full gundog training, but it just didn’t feel fair—to the dog, the owner, or the process. That’s why we now offer this two-week evaluation: it gives us a chance to assess your dog’s drive and suitability, while giving you confidence that the training path is the right one. It’s not about excluding dogs—it’s about setting them (and you) up for success.
